What a swimsuit has to do for an apron belly

A swimsuit for an apron belly has two jobs: keep any edge or seam off the crease, and hold the fold without squeezing it out the sides. A one-piece or swim dress does both. Bikini bottoms and mid-rise swim briefs put an elastic edge right where the fold sits.

Swimwear is harder than shapewear for one reason: it gets wet. Wet fabric stretches and gets heavier, so a waistband that barely holds on dry land slides into the crease once you’re in the water. That’s why we rank on three things:

Fit problems show up in the threads we read too. One Reddit user with an apron belly said a one-piece didn’t fit because “my torso is too long and my apron belly slightly too big”.^[3] Torso length matters as much as the belly measurement.

Which swimsuit style fits your apron belly grade

Plastic surgeons grade an apron belly from 1 to 5 by how far it hangs, from the pubic hairline to the knees.^[1] Grades 1–2 usually do well in a lined one-piece. Grade 3 needs a skirt that covers the upper thigh. Past grade 3, a swim dress with a long skirt and a separate support layer is worth trying.

How to size swimwear with an apron belly

Use the brand’s inch chart, measure your hips around the widest point including the fold, and check torso length if the brand gives it. Shaping swimwear often runs snug: Miraclesuit tells first-time buyers its slimming suits fit snug and suggests going up one size from your dress size.

1. Hips: tape level around the widest part of your hips and the fold.
2. Torso: Miraclesuit’s size chart includes a torso measurement alongside bust, waist and hips. A one-piece that’s too short pulls the lining down onto the fold.
3. Letter sizes: Swimsuits For All sells numeric sizes to 34 and Miraclesuit to 24W. Neither lists an X equivalent on the pages we checked, so don’t convert. Use inches.
4. Between sizes: go up in shaping suits. A too-tight lining pushes tissue out at the leg line.

In the Reddit threads we read, people with apron bellies named Swimsuits For All and Lands’ End for plus-size suits, mentioned coverage tricks such as wearing bottoms backwards, and flagged torso length as the reason a one-piece didn’t fit. These are a handful of comments, not a survey.^[3]

Protecting the skin under the fold

The skin under an apron belly is prone to intertrigo, a rash driven by warm temperatures, friction, moisture and poor ventilation.^[2] A wet swimsuit adds all of those, so dry the fold fully after swimming and change out of a wet suit instead of sitting in it.

• Rinse off pool or sea water, then pat the fold dry before you dress.
• Absorbent powders and loose, breathable clothing are standard prevention advice.^[2]
• Don’t wear a firm shaping suit over broken or raw skin.
• See a doctor for a rash that smells, weeps, bleeds or doesn’t settle within a few days.

What didn’t make the list

• Lands’ End tummy-control suits: a Reddit user with an apron belly recommends them to 3X, but the product pages we tried returned errors or blocked our checks, so we couldn’t verify sizes or prices. We’ll re-check.
• Other Miraclesuit plus one-pieces (Spotlight Oceanus, Crossover, Colorblock Helix): same 16W–24W run and shaping fabric as the Oceanus, so they add little for an apron belly.
• Summersalt: sizes to 24 and long-torso versions, but we found no tummy-control lining listed.
• High-waist tummy-control bikini bottoms: we didn’t find one in plus sizes that we could verify on a brand page this round.
• Torrid, Kiyonna and Cupshe: we couldn’t reach product pages with sizes and prices, so none are ranked.

We looked at 14 swimsuits and verified 5 on the brand’s own product page on 14 Sep 2026, recording size range, construction, lining, fabric, price and return policy. We read public Reddit comments about swimsuits from people with apron bellies. Each suit gets a score from the same weighted six-criterion rubric we use for shapewear.
