The best swimsuits for an apron belly cover the fold line and hold it with a lining, instead of putting a waistband in the crease. For most grade 1–3 aprons that means a swim dress with a full one-piece underneath, like the Swimsuits For All Tank Swimdress, sold in sizes 8–34.
Our top pick
Researched, not hands-on tested
Swimsuits For All Flattering Chlorine Resistant Tank Swimdress
Two layers over the fold: a skirt that hides the crease and a power mesh lining that smooths it, in the widest size run we could verify. The shaping is light, and we couldn’t confirm the US price, so check it before you buy.
- Best for
- Grade 1–3 aprons who want the fold covered by a skirt as well as held by a lining, in sizes to 34.
- Skip if
- You want firm shaping. The brand calls this lining light, and the straps don’t adjust.

What a swimsuit has to do for an apron belly
A swimsuit for an apron belly has two jobs: keep any edge or seam off the crease, and hold the fold without squeezing it out the sides. A one-piece or swim dress does both. Bikini bottoms and mid-rise swim briefs put an elastic edge right where the fold sits.
Swimwear is harder than shapewear for one reason: it gets wet. Wet fabric stretches and gets heavier, so a waistband that barely holds on dry land slides into the crease once you’re in the water. That’s why we rank on three things:
- No edge on the fold. A full one-piece has no waistband at all. A swim dress adds a skirt that falls past the crease and hides the leg line.
- A lining that holds. Power mesh or shaping fabric across the front smooths the fold. Look for the words “tummy control lining” or a named shaping fabric, not just “flattering”.
- A size run that fits. Apron bellies often follow large weight changes, so many people who need these suits wear plus sizes.[1] Two of our five picks stop at 24W.
Fit problems show up in the threads we read too. One Reddit user with an apron belly said a one-piece didn’t fit because “my torso is too long and my apron belly slightly too big”.[3] Torso length matters as much as the belly measurement.
Which swimsuit style fits your apron belly grade
Plastic surgeons grade an apron belly from 1 to 5 by how far it hangs, from the pubic hairline to the knees.[1] Grades 1–2 usually do well in a lined one-piece. Grade 3 needs a skirt that covers the upper thigh. Past grade 3, a swim dress with a long skirt and a separate support layer is worth trying.
| Grade | Fold reaches | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Pubic hairline | One-piece with a tummy-control lining |
| 2 | Groin and thigh crease | Lined one-piece with shirring or a sarong drape, or a swim dress |
| 3 | Upper thigh | Swim dress with a full one-piece and lining underneath |
| 4–5 | Mid-thigh to knees | Longest swim dress you can find; ask a doctor about skin care before long swims |
Not sure of your grade? The apron belly guide explains each one. If you also want something under everyday clothes, our shapewear picks use the same grading.
How to size swimwear with an apron belly
Use the brand’s inch chart, measure your hips around the widest point including the fold, and check torso length if the brand gives it. Shaping swimwear often runs snug: Miraclesuit tells first-time buyers its slimming suits fit snug and suggests going up one size from your dress size.
- Hips: tape level around the widest part of your hips and the fold.
- Torso: Miraclesuit’s size chart includes a torso measurement alongside bust, waist and hips. A one-piece that’s too short pulls the lining down onto the fold.
- Letter sizes: Swimsuits For All sells numeric sizes to 34 and Miraclesuit to 24W. Neither lists an X equivalent on the pages we checked, so don’t convert. Use inches.
- Between sizes: go up in shaping suits. A too-tight lining pushes tissue out at the leg line.

1. Best overall: skirt plus tummy-control lining, sizes to 34
Swimsuits For All Flattering Chlorine Resistant Tank Swimdress
This suit layers a full one-piece under an A-line skirt, with a power mesh lining across the front. The skirt falls past the crease (the side seam is 23 in on a size 20), so the fold line isn’t visible, and the lining keeps the fold from swinging. Swimsuits For All sells it in sizes 8–34 and says customers rate it true to size. The limits: the brand calls the shaping light, the straps don’t adjust, and its site showed our checker a non-US currency, so we couldn’t record a US price.
- Type:
- Skirted swimdress (one-piece underneath)
- Sizes:
- 8–34
- Rise:
- Full one-piece under an A-line skirt; side seam 23 in on size 20
- Compression:
- Light shaping (brand label)
- Fabric:
- 82% nylon, 18% spandex
- Price:
- Varies USD price not shown to our checker (the site displayed a local currency on 14 Sep 2026)
- Returns:
- Free exchanges within 60 days; refunds within 60 days for unworn, unwashed items, shipping not refunded. Final-sale items excluded.
Best for
Grade 1–3 aprons who want the fold covered by a skirt as well as held by a lining, in sizes to 34.
Skip if
You want firm shaping. The brand calls this lining light, and the straps don’t adjust.
What works
- Skirt plus a full one-piece underneath: two layers over the fold
- Sizes 8–34, the widest run on this page
- Rated true to size by customer reviews, per the brand page
Watch out for
- Light shaping only
- Non-adjustable straps
- We couldn’t confirm the USD price

2. Best one-piece for a grade 1–2 fold
Swim 365 Sarong V-Neck Tummy Control One-Piece Swimsuit
A one-piece with a power mesh tummy-control lining and a sarong drape that crosses the lower belly. That drape does the hiding the skirt does on our top pick, with less fabric in the water. Side shirring breaks up the line of the suit. It runs 8–34, and several colors were on sale or clearance when we checked. On a grade 3 fold, the uncovered leg line is the weak spot.
- Type:
- One-piece with sarong drape
- Sizes:
- 8–34
- Rise:
- Full one-piece; draped sarong panel across the front
- Fabric:
- Nylon/spandex (percentages not listed)

- Returns:

Best for
Grade 1–2 aprons who want a one-piece with a drape that crosses the lower belly.

What works
- Tummy-control lining plus a draped front panel
- Sizes 8–34

3. Best allover shaping
Miraclesuit Plus Size Oceanus One Piece
Miraclesuit’s plus version of its best-selling shirred one-piece. The whole suit is made from its shaping fabric, so there’s no panel edge to land on the fold. The brand says its slimming swimwear fits snug and suggests sizing up. Most colors were $124.99 against a $184 list price. It stops at 24W, which rules it out for many bodies above that.
- Type:
- Shirred shaping one-piece
- Sizes:
- 16W–24W
- Rise:
- Full one-piece; surplice V-neck, shirred front
- Compression:
- Allover control (brand label)

You’re above 24W, or you hate a snug fit. Miraclesuit tells first-time buyers its swimwear fits snug.

4. Best budget coverage
Lime Ricki Black Swim Dress
A modest swim dress over a one-piece, sold to 4X, at $30.13 on clearance when we checked, with 3X and 4X still in stock. It covers the fold well but lists no tummy-control lining, so it hides rather than holds. The store data tags it both Final Sale and Exchange Only, so assume you can’t return it.
- Type:

- Sizes:
- XXS–4X
- Rise:

What people with an apron belly say about swimsuits
In the Reddit threads we read, people with apron bellies named Swimsuits For All and Lands’ End for plus-size suits, mentioned coverage tricks such as wearing bottoms backwards, and flagged torso length as the reason a one-piece didn’t fit. These are a handful of comments, not a survey.[3]
“Land’s End has some fab suits up to 3x along with zip up hooded rashguards, which I love. SwimsuitsForAll has amazing slimming one pieces.”
“if you like cheeky bikinis but want to hide an apron - turn the bottoms around backwards!!! no one will notice and it’s perfect coverage.”
“I also got one of their once piece swim suits but unfortunately my torso is too long and my apron belly slightly too big for it to fit comfortably at the moment.”
“In clothes, even a swimsuit, it all looks absolutely fine and that's all that matters to me.”
The last comment is worth keeping in mind. Plenty of people with an apron belly just wear the swimsuit they like. The picks above are for anyone who wants more coverage or hold, not a rule.
Protecting the skin under the fold
The skin under an apron belly is prone to intertrigo, a rash driven by warm temperatures, friction, moisture and poor ventilation.[2] A wet swimsuit adds all of those, so dry the fold fully after swimming and change out of a wet suit instead of sitting in it.
- Rinse off pool or sea water, then pat the fold dry before you dress.
- Absorbent powders and loose, breathable clothing are standard prevention advice.[2]
- Don’t wear a firm shaping suit over broken or raw skin.
- See a doctor for a rash that smells, weeps, bleeds or doesn’t settle within a few days.
What didn’t make the list
- Lands’ End tummy-control suits: a Reddit user with an apron belly recommends them to 3X, but the product pages we tried returned errors or blocked our checks, so we couldn’t verify sizes or prices. We’ll re-check.
- Other Miraclesuit plus one-pieces (Spotlight Oceanus, Crossover, Colorblock Helix): same 16W–24W run and shaping fabric as the Oceanus, so they add little for an apron belly.
- Summersalt: sizes to 24 and long-torso versions, but we found no tummy-control lining listed.
- High-waist tummy-control bikini bottoms: we didn’t find one in plus sizes that we could verify on a brand page this round.
- Torrid, Kiyonna and Cupshe: we couldn’t reach product pages with sizes and prices, so none are ranked.
How we picked
We looked at 14 swimsuits and verified 5 on the brand’s own product page on 14 Sep 2026, recording size range, construction, lining, fabric, price and return policy. We read public Reddit comments about swimsuits from people with apron bellies. Each suit gets a score from the same weighted six-criterion rubric we use for shapewear. For swimwear, “lower-belly design” means coverage above the fold plus a tummy-control lining. Where we couldn’t confirm a US price, value is scored at the neutral midpoint and the pick says so. We didn’t wear-test these swimsuits. Full method: how we research.
