## What a faja is, and why the style matters with an apron belly

A faja (Spanish for girdle) is a firm compression garment. Colombian fajas are typically powernet, closed with hooks or a zipper. Many are sold both for everyday shaping and for recovery after surgery. On an apron belly, full-torso fajas work best because they have no waistband for the fold to push down.

The word covers a lot of garments, and they behave very differently on a hanging belly:

Size by the brand’s inch chart, not by dress size, and measure your hips around the widest part including the fold. ## The truth about waist trainers and an apron belly

Waist trainers don’t remove fat or skin and can’t permanently reshape your waist. Cleveland Clinic says the idea that they train the waist slimmer “isn’t really possible”. On an apron belly they also miss the problem: they sit above the fold. And the compression can make breathing harder.

What Cleveland Clinic’s hepatologist Jamile Wakim-Fleming, MD, lists as the downsides:

- **Breathing:** the garment “squeezes your sternum and ribs — causing difficulty breathing”.
- **Organs:** squeezing the belly also squeezes the liver, kidneys, pancreas and spleen.
- **Heartburn:** the pressure can push stomach contents back up and make reflux worse.
- **Skin:** waist trainers aren’t made of breathable material, so you sweat and itch.

## Fajas after a tummy tuck or panniculectomy

Many fajas, including both Salomé picks, are sold for “stage 2” recovery after surgery. Wear one only when your surgeon says so and in the style they specify. The evidence is mixed: StatPearls says compression garments should be worn after panniculectomy to prevent seroma, while a 2020 surgical review says binders haven’t been shown to reduce it.

Janis et al. write that binders “have not been shown to decrease the incidence of seroma”, though “many patients find the support to be comfortable”. We looked at fajas, girdles and waist trainers from seven brands and verified 6 on the brand’s own US product page on 14 Sep 2026, recording size range, coverage, closure, fabric, price and return policy. We read the faja comments among our 83 Reddit reports. **What is the best faja for an apron belly? +**

Our top research pick is the Feelingirl V-Shaped Faja ($49.99): a full-torso faja bodysuit with no waistband at the fold, sold to 6XL, from the brand Reddit users with apron bellies recommend. For a traditional Colombian powernet faja, the Fajas Salomé 217 ($130, to 5XL) is the most complete build.

**Do fajas work on an apron belly? +**

They hold and smooth the fold while you wear them. Full-torso styles work best because there’s no waistband to roll under the fold. A faja doesn’t remove fat or skin: the American Society of Plastic Surgeons says excess skin folds are “virtually impossible to correct by diet, weight loss, or exercise”.

**Is a waist trainer the same as a faja? +**

No. A waist trainer (or cincher) only covers the waist, so it doesn’t hold a hanging lower belly and its bottom edge can land on the fold. Cleveland Clinic says waist trainers can’t really train the waist slimmer and the compression can make breathing harder.

**Should I size up or down in a faja with an apron belly? +**

Use the brand’s inch chart rather than your dress size, measured around the fold at its widest. Don’t size down for more compression. One Reddit user wearing a Feelingirl faja advises buying “true to size if you value breathing”.

**Can I wear a faja after a tummy tuck or panniculectomy? +**

Only as your surgeon directs. Some fajas are labeled for stage 2 recovery, but surgeons differ on garments, and studies disagree on whether binders reduce fluid build-up. See our compression garments page for post-op options.
