# Apron Belly vs FUPA: How to Tell Which One You Have > A FUPA is fat on the mons pubis. An apron belly is abdominal skin and fat that hangs over it. The difference changes which garments and treatments work. URL: https://fixapronbelly.com/apron-belly-vs-fupa/ Updated: 2026-09-14 Updated Sep 14, 2026 · By [Fix Apron Belly Editorial Team](https://fixapronbelly.com/about/) · 8 sources · [Not medical advice](https://fixapronbelly.com/medical-disclaimer/) **Apron belly vs FUPA comes down to where the tissue comes from.** A FUPA (“fat upper pubic area”) is fat on the mons pubis, the mound over your pubic bone. An apron belly is a fold of abdominal skin and fat that hangs *down over* the mons. Garments and treatments work differently for each: a FUPA needs flattening, while an apron belly needs [shapewear that lifts and sits above the fold](https://fixapronbelly.com/best-shapewear-for-apron-belly/). ## Apron belly vs FUPA: the difference A FUPA is extra fat, and sometimes sagging skin, on the mons pubis itself. It sits below the belly and in front of the pubic bone. An apron belly, or panniculus, starts on the abdomen and hangs down. Even the mildest apron belly (grade 1) already covers the pubic hairline and mons. The confusion is common. In a Reddit thread about the “dreaded FUPA”, the top reply reads: > “I think a lot of us are confusing apron belly with fupa (myself included)” Reddit user, r/Semaglutide, Feb 5, 2025. [Read the thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/Semaglutide/comments/1iid2ba/the_dreaded_fupa/mb67u74/) The mix-up matters because the two respond differently to weight loss, need different garments and are treated with different surgeries. ## Side by side Illustration by Fix Apron Belly, not to scale. | | FUPA | Apron belly | | --- | --- | --- | | Where it is | On the mons pubis, in front of the pubic bone | Starts on the lower abdomen, hangs over the mons | | Medical term | Mons pubis fat or ptosis | Panniculus or pannus | | Overhanging fold | No | Yes, with a skin-on-skin crease underneath | | Graded | No standard grade used by insurers | Grades 1–5 by how far it hangs | | Skin fold | None | Yes: the crease is where intertrigo (rash) develops | | Surgery | Monsplasty (cosmetic) | Panniculectomy or tummy tuck | | Insurance | Rarely covered | Panniculectomy sometimes covered when criteria are met | ## How to tell whether you have an apron belly or a FUPA Stand in front of a mirror and try to lift the tissue above your pubic area. If there’s a fold you can lift, with skin touching skin in a crease underneath, it’s an apron belly. If the fullness sits on the pubic mound itself and there’s nothing to lift, it’s a FUPA. 1. **The lift test.** Can you get a hand under it? A Reddit user explained it: with an apron belly, “you can get a hand or your pants under it and stop the skin from touching”. 2. **The crease.** An apron belly has a crease where the fold meets the lower body, and that’s where rashes start. A FUPA has no crease. 3. **Where your waistband goes.** Waistbands tend to roll under an apron belly. With a FUPA they sit across or above the mound. 4. **How far it hangs.** If the tissue covers the hairline or reaches the thighs, you’re looking at an apron belly grade, not a FUPA. A panniculus “can include the mons pubis”, so a sagging mons and a hanging abdominal fold often come together, especially after large weight loss or pregnancy. A nurse on Reddit describes exactly that: > “A fupa is a Fat Upper Pubic Area. It's a chubby mons pubis. The belly flap is a "mother's apron" and not a FUPA. Two different things, of which I have both.” Reddit user, r/nursing, Jul 28, 2023. [Read the thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/nursing/comments/15c4utg/did_i_miss_the_memo/jtvg6kq/) It matters for surgery: according to Cleveland Clinic, a tummy tuck or liposuction “don’t lift your pubic area”, which is why surgeons may add a monsplasty to the same operation. ## What about a B belly? “B belly” is an informal term for a belly with a horizontal crease across the middle, so the profile looks like a capital B. It isn’t a medical term. A crease above the navel, with fullness above and below, is usually called a B belly. A single fold hanging down over the pubic area is an apron belly. The lift test above tells them apart. ## How treatment differs A FUPA that’s mostly fat can shrink with weight loss or be reduced with liposuction if the skin is firm. An apron belly is mostly stretched skin, which diet, exercise and liposuction can’t remove. Only a panniculectomy or tummy tuck removes it. - **Weight loss:** reduces fat in both, but “excess skin and folds are virtually impossible to correct by diet, weight loss, or exercise”. One Reddit user put it as “FUPA will go down with fat loss… but an apron belly doesn’t go away unless you have surgery”, which is broadly consistent with the ASPS view. - **Liposuction:** works best in people with “firm, elastic skin and good muscle tone”, so it suits some FUPAs and few apron bellies. - **Monsplasty:** lifts or reduces the mons. It’s cosmetic, and incisions can take at least eight weeks to heal completely. - **Panniculectomy:** removes the hanging fold, without tightening muscles. Insurers such as Cigna and Aetna consider covering it when the fold hangs at or below the pubic bone and causes a skin problem that hasn’t responded to 3 months of treatment. Not medical advice A surgeon can tell you whether tissue is mostly fat or mostly skin, and what grade a fold is. Ask for that before choosing liposuction or surgery. ## What to wear for each For a FUPA, a high-waist brief or short with a flat front panel over the mons is usually enough. For an apron belly, choose a garment whose top edge clears the fold, such as a high-waist boned short, cami or bodysuit, so the waistband can’t roll underneath it. Our [apron belly shapewear guide](https://fixapronbelly.com/best-shapewear-for-apron-belly/) compares 8 garments on exactly this, with sizes up to 15X and a “skip if” for each. ## Frequently asked questions **Is a FUPA the same as an apron belly? +** No. A FUPA is fat and sagging on the mons pubis, the mound in front of the pubic bone. An apron belly is a fold of abdominal skin and fat that hangs down over the mons, and at higher grades over the thighs. **Can you have a FUPA and an apron belly at the same time? +** Yes. The mons can be part of a panniculus, and a nurse on Reddit describes having both. Surgeons sometimes combine a monsplasty with a tummy tuck because a tummy tuck alone doesn’t lift the pubic area. **Does a FUPA go away with weight loss? +** Fat on the mons can shrink with overall weight loss. Loose skin there, like loose abdominal skin, usually doesn’t tighten on its own. Cleveland Clinic lists age, pregnancy and significant weight loss as causes of a sagging mons. **What is FUPA short for? +** FUPA is slang for “fat upper pubic area”. Doctors use the anatomical term mons pubis. The surgery to reduce or lift it is a monsplasty. **Will insurance cover FUPA removal? +** Rarely. Cleveland Clinic describes monsplasty as a cosmetic procedure. Insurers consider covering a panniculectomy only when an apron belly hangs at or below the pubic bone and causes documented medical problems. Bottom line Lift it: if there’s a fold, dress for the fold A FUPA sits on the mons. An apron belly hangs over it. If you have a fold with a crease underneath, pick garments built to sit above it.
